Bafta Cymru Awards 2024
It was a wonderful evening at the 2024 Bafta Cymru awards, I loved every minuute of catching up with friends and colleagues and celebrating the creative work of local talent for 2024. Thanks so much to Bafta Cymru for the Costume deisgn award nomination for Black Cake, it was the real icing on the cake (yes, I went there) to a fantastic creative journey for the stories we told. As a little token on the night, I took character Bunny's handbag from the show to the ceremony with me (without what Bunny hid in it!).

"Even away from the turquoise seas of 1960s Jamaica, where every character is styled to within an inch of their life in exquisite period costuming, the show has a commitment to elegance"
The Guardian review of Black Cake for the UK release on Disney+ has made me absolutely glow on behalf of my team in the costume department. - it's wonderful to see the finished result of our work be so appreciated.

Gold Derby - Costume Design Panel - November 10, 2023
From the Gold Derby website:
The five acclaimed costume designers on our Gold Derby Meet the Experts costume design panel have at least one thing in common: all worked on period shows, ranging from the Georgian era of “Queen Charlotte” to the Upper Midwest in 2019 on “Fargo.” But whether it is period costumes or contemporary fits, Hayley Nebauer (“Black Cake”), Sarah Arthur (“The Continental: From the World of John Wick”), Carol Case (“Fargo”), Mirren Gordon-Crozier (“Lessons in Chemistry”), and Lyn Paolo (“Queen Charlotte”) find a way to excel.

Black Cake - November 1 - US release (2023)
Black Cake will stream exclusively on Hulu in the US, with the first three episodes premiering on November 1. All new episodes arrive on Wednesdays at 12 A.M. ET.
The series consists of 8 x 1 hour episodes. More infomation and images from the show can be seen in the galleries.
For her novel Black Cake, a story that blends food and family history, author Charmaine Wilkerson found inspiration in her own family recipes. Specifically the one for black cake, a traditional Caribbean rum-soaked fruitcake, which her mother hand-wrote on notebook paper so it could be passed on for generations.
The New York Times bestseller, which was published in February 2022, is now a series executive produced by Oprah Winfrey with Marissa Jo Cerar (Women of the Movement, 13 Reasons Why) serving as showrunner. Mia Isaac (Not Okay), Adrienne Warren (The Woman King), Chipo Chung (Sunshine), and Ashley Thomas (Them) are in the cast; and the story sweeps across the globe from Jamaica, Italy, Scotland, and England to Southern California. Here’s how to follow the series.

Writing! August 2023
Since finishing work on 'Black Cake' in February, I have taken the past 6 months to focus on research and writing a TV series that I have had burning in my mind for a few years now. I had notebooks full of thoughts, folders of research and many sleepless nights thinking about the stories I am weaving into the series, so I decided to take the plunge and give it a go!
I never thought writing would be easy, but it goes at such a fluctuating rhythm, it is quite a change from my usual work! I am not making a career change, I still LOVE the work of world building and storytelling that costume design contributes to, but I am enjoying the challenge of trying to build my thoughts into a coherent TV series.
I recently had notes back on Episodes 1 and 2 (of 8) from the script editor and it's a big learning curve. I won't call myself a writer yet, but I am charged, getting this on paper. After trying my hand at Producing, this is a new avenue of learning and expression that's proving very rewarding to do.
The artwork shown here is the first image I'll share relating to the show. Does it make you feel slightly ill at ease? A little uncomfortable?
The show is years off if ever it gets there, but I have faith in it, the show has some unique aspects to it that are also very personal to me, it tells the stories of a number of women from different places and cultures spread over the past few hundred years... they all have a common thread linking them. I'll keep the rest under my hat for now.
Hopefully I can update you with some exciting news about it in the future!

Queen Charlotte (Netflix) - release May 2023
Shortly after finishing work on the wild ride that was 'Prizefighter' in 2021, I was offered the opportunity to work on this wonderful opera of a show. Queen Charlotte is a prequel to Netflix's widely loved Bridgerton and is set in an earlier period, in the 18th Century. As someone who adores costume of the 18th Century, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to work on this sumptuous feast of SIlk, gown, embellished accessories and jewels, while working as ACD to designers Lyn Paolo and Laura Frecon. I spent eight months working on the series from the very start, during the set-up, world-building and momentum-driving stages of getting it all going. It was a busy time and I met some lovely people and permanent friends in and outside of the huge costume department (over 80 people full-time, it was immense in scale). I can't wait to see the show and hope it's as much of a success as it deserves to be. Watch with hungry eyes, it is beauitful from the curtains to the coaches to the buttons.

Black Cake - Series 1 shooting
Shooting in Jamaica, the UK, Italy and the US, this wonderful series is based on the bestselling novel of the same title, championed (and also produced by) Oprah Winfrey. The show follows teen Jamaican girl Covey and her story, telling it to her grown children in the present day, the story covers 1940 to 2023 and hits every decade in betweem. The scale of the show is vast, covering some intensely emotional and meaningful experiences, stories about women that are seldom shared and told. I am extremely proud of the work my team and I have done on this show and can't wait for it to be available to watch. Please click the image above for more information

September 2021 - Still in the Georgian era!
After spending most of the year playing with the visual joys of the Georgian era, I am now working on a beautiful, sumptuous period tv drama set in the 18th century for Netflix. More info to follow in due course, but the project has it's heart in one of my favourite periods, so it is a pure joy to be digging through the research and collaborating to bring the stories and visuals together.

PRIZEFIGHTER - THE LIFE OF JEM BELCHER
This film stars Ray Winston, the brilliant Jodhi May and Russell Crowe alongside a host of talents. Covering a fascinating period from 1788-1805, the heart of this film is centred on the working class and stories of the achievements of historic characters of the time. It was one hell of a 7 month ride, filming across Wales, England, Lithuania and Malta, coping with covid constraints and many challenges, but creating some beautiful images. More information to follow relating to the film's completion and release in 2022.

October 2020 – Covid, Maternity Leave & Mentoring
It has undoubtedly been a tumultuous year for our industry without any indication if or when our work will return to anything like the normal we knew before. My daughter was born earlier this year and as I am currently nearing the end of Maternity leave, in light of the huge impact that the pandemic has had on our industry this year, I would like to give back a little and do something to help a young costume person in our industry. Before or as I begin my next project, I would like to offer some of my time to a young person who has shown a commitment to trying to break into the industry. I will be offering more about this possibility via Twitter when I have more information available to share.

February 2020 – A Discovery of Witches (Cardiff, UK and Italy)
After completing work on McDonald & Dodds, I had a couple of months spare before my Maternity Leave was due to start and so was delighted to join costume designer Sarah Arthur’s costume team as the Crowd Costume Supervisor for the lasty two episodes of the series, to oversee the many Elizabethan period crowd costumes featured on extras in the show. The role started in Cardiff and filmed in Northern Italy, completing work at the end of January. I love this period and have worked on quite a few jobs set around this time, it was nice to be involved with the team.
